PBL Election: A Vision of Science

A Vision of ScienceWhat is the big deal with science? I've often wondered why presidential candidates historically steer away from addressing or debating scientific issues in open political forums? My initial thought is they, like the majority of middle America, are ignorant about issues such as the environment and nuclear weapons. I then think maybe they feel that the economy, employment rate, human rights, and foreign policy are more important and on the forefront of the minds of the general public. Here is the bottom line: Science and technology have accounted for more than half of the growth and innovations in our country since World War II. Our natural resourses are limited so how are our candidates addressing the issue of the US remaining as a world leader in science innovations? "We the People" have been given the power to elect officials who take these isssues seriously. Our children and grandchildren should not reep the poor stewardship of their forefathers! We have one planet and it is time we exercise our civic duty and preserve what we can for future generations and develop new technologies to which provide solutions for our misuse.Assignment:1. Begin with 3 science/technology issues, the environment(this is broad: focus on climate change and global warming), nuclear weapons, and ramphications of off-shore drilling. Determine why these issues should be important to Americans? What economic impacts both positive and negative can these issues have on the American public? What is the political party stance on these issues and are the political candidates following the party platform? What are some solutions you would like the candidates to come up with to address current concerns or abuses?2. Once you have researched and formed an opinion, write a one paragraph argument for each of the s/t issues. Encourage social dialougue with atleast 5 other members of our school.3. Find an existing or develop you own political cartoon which reflects the stance you took in Part 2 of this assignment.4. Make sure you have posted the aforementioned assignments for review by Sept. 26, 2008.
